Today, the 20th of February 2022 marks the World Day of Social Justice. The theme for this year World Day of Social Justice is "Achieving social justice through formal employment". On the 26th of November 2007 at the 63rd session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), 20th February was declared as World Day for Social Justice. Consequently, the lnternational Labour Organization (ILO) on the 10th of June 2008 with a motive of fair globalization passed an ILO declaration on social justice unanimously. The day was first celebrated on the 20th of February 2009. Henceforth, World Day of Social Justice is celebrated on 20th February every year. It is a day to remind each and everyone of us that it is our collective responsibility to act against social injustice. The aim of World Day of Social Justice is to bridge the social inequality gaps in areas of employment, social protection, illiteracy, income, healthcare and gender inequalities. It is a day to raise voices against social injustice and to bring the various communities internationally together to eliminate poverty, gender and physical discrimination, religion and cultural discrimination and to raise awareness on the need for an all inclusive and socially integrated society for all.
It is a day to remind humanity that it is our collective responsibility to act against all forms of social injustice in our society. In the words of the late Martin Luther king Jr. on social justice, he opined that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". And in the words of the great Albert Einstein, he opined that "striving for social injustice is the most important thing to do in life". This goes to show the importance of social justice in our society no matter where it is. We must ensure justice for all irrespective of one's social, economic or political status in the society. Equality of status and opportunity should be our watchword for a fairer, equitable and an all inclusive society for us all. World Day of Social Justice is a day set aside to raise voices against social injustice and to remove barriers regarding gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability status. This years commemoration supports efforts by the international community to search for solutions to achieve sustainable development, poverty eradication and the promotion of full employment and decent work, universal social protection, gender equality and access to social well-being and justice for all.
