October 5 was proclaimed as World Teachers' Day by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1994, with the aim of honouring the adoption of UNESCO/ILO recommendation. This was part of the intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris that recognized the status of teachers in cooperation with the lnternational Labour Organization (ILO). After the adoption of this recommendation the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared October 5 to be World Teachers' Day. The theme for this year's World Teachers' Day 2022 is: " The transformation of education begins with teachers ". The day is celebrated to focus on the work of educators. According to UNESCO, nearly 69 million teachers are needed to reach quality education for all by 2030. Without teachers, it is impossible to transform education for the better. On this World Teachers' Day, iam urging all countries to invest in teachers and provide more support to teachers and the educational sector. On this day, it is on all of us to support teachers by;
- Demanding fair salaries and good working conditions for teachers.
- Calling for policies that protect teachers.
- Ensuring teachers are given the autonomy they need.
Teachers are heroes, they leave lasting memories and legacies with all of us and make an invaluable contributions to students and communities. On this World Teachers' Day, let's join our voices together in saying THANK YOU for their commitment and dedication. If you can read and write, then you must THANK a TEACHER. Let's celebrate all the GOOD TEACHERS.
