The lnternational Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) is observed on 16th June each year. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/72/281) recognizing this day. The theme for this year's lnternational Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) 2022 is: "Recovery and Resilience through Digital and financial Inclusion". A remittance is money sent back home by a worker who work in a foreign land. This money that is sent back home by migrant workers is considered to be one of the largest financial inflows in developing countries. International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) aims to recognize the efforts of such workers who help for the betterment of the lives of their loved ones back home. The lnternational Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) recognizes more than 200 million migrant workers, women and men, who send money home to over 800 million family members. This day further highlights the great resilience of migrant workers in the face of economic insecurities, natural and climate related disasters and a global pandemic. The lnternational Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) is now globally recognized and is a key initiative in the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration (objective 20), which urges the reduction of transfer costs and greater financial inclusion through remittances.
Globalization has turned the world into a global village. Bread winners can still support their families from anywhere in the world. Remittances are one of the single most powerful financial forces in existence today. Not only do the money sent home by migrant workers dwarf international aid, it also frequently surpass foreign direct investment too. The day aims to bring recognition to the contribution done by migrants who leave their homes to work and try to attain a better life for their families. This day celebrates the contributions of migrants who send money back home and strengthen their families and our economy. Today, l celebrate diligent people who send funds to support their families in various countries. I acknowledge their efforts. This day is also a special day to celebrate the hardwork, sacrifice and genorosity of all expatriates in providing a valuable lifeline for their loved ones at home and also contributing to the economy of their countries of origin. I recognize the hardwork of Nigerians overseas who work tirelessly for their loved ones in Nigeria and the benefits of home remittances to our economy. It is also a day recognizing the impact these contributions make on households, communities, countries and the entire continent.
