The universal declaration of human rights (UDHR) was adopted by the united nations (UN) on 10th December 1948. For the first time, 48 countries celebrated this day along side the united nations (UN) General Assembly. In the year 1950, resolution A/RES/ 423(V) was passed by the Generally Assembly, urging all countries and institutions to adopt it. United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) announced in December 1953 to celebrate this day annually. Since then, December 10th has been an important day to remind humanity of the rights they deserve and the rights they violate. The theme of this year's international human rights day 2021 is "reducing inequalities and advancing human rights". This year's theme is related to " equality " and article 1 of the universal declaration of human rights (UDHR) which states that "all human being are born free and equal in dignity and rights." The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the universal declaration of human rights (UDHR) to ensure that inalienable rights of every human being, irrespective of their caste, gender, race, religion, sex, nationality etc are respected.
MRS ANNA ELEANOR ROOSEVELT, WIFE OF THE 32ND PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT) GOING THROUGH THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS (UDHR) AT THE UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS, NEW YORK, USA IN 1948.
This is an international treaty that enshrines the fundamental human rights of all people every where, and it must be adhered to with the highest integrity. The declaration of human rights day is one of the milestones and achievements of the united nations (UN). Our society today is encompassed by rampant discrimination, numerous violation of human rights, inhuman treatment and injustices everywhere. We must at all times preserve our dignity and that of other people with respect and guidance of the universal declaration of human rights (UDHR). The universal declaration of human rights (UDHR) is deemed a milestone document that is available in more than 500 languages and is said to be the most translated document in the world, according to the united nations (UN) official website.
The main objective of international human rights day is to make people around the world aware of the importance of human rights and commit to their observance. Human rights day is celebrated to make people aware of human rights globally. Human rights mainly include international commitments on economic, social, cultural, religious, civil and political rights. This day has played an important role to stop the atrocities against humanity all over the world. Taking steps for the rights of others has been included as a special purpose on this day. Human rights are the rights of any human being to life, liberty, equality and respect. This year's theme is about "equality" that refers to article 1 of the universal declaration of human rights (UDHR), "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights". The theme is aligned with the united nations (UN) 2030 agenda that has been drafted in a document, that talks about the international body's approach towards finding sustainable solutions "for deep- rooted forms of discrimination that have affected the most vulnerable people in the societies, including women and girls, indigenous people, people of African descents, LGBTI, migrants and people living with disabilities etc.
IAM TAKING ACTION ON INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY.
On this day, we observe the 73rd human rights day. The universal declaration of human rights (UDHR) emphasizes that as human beings, each one of us is entitled to our basic freedom of rights, regardless of each person's gender, skin complexity, religion, race, socio- economic status or physical abilities. Human rights are universal, which means that they belong to all of us, everybody in the world. Human rights are inalienable, which means that they cannot be taken away from us. Human rights are indivisible, which means that governments should not be able to pick and choose which are respected. There are 30 articles as contained in the united nations declaration of human rights (UDHR) document which must be respected by all citizens and governments across the world. In conclusion, on this year's 2021 international human rights day to mark the event, the united nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres made his remarks that "today and everyday, we will continue to work for justice, equality, dignity and human rights for all".
